Nyoman Darmawan (Gamang King) is a 4th generation master wood carver and 3rd born son of Bali’s renown master wood carver Made Ada. King’s venture into photography and art was influenced by his desire for an independent life. He chose to live with his grandparents, trained to be a chef, but eventually returned to his passion of photography, traveling extensively through Bali and around the world, supported by the Government’s art program. In Bali, he has focused on capturing the festivities surrounding prominent ceremonies. King’s art blends photography and art, to create surreal and intimate images of life in Bali. Today, when not creating, he can be found teaching his “triple threat” of visual arts: photography, painting and wood carving.
