Let’s Jiva!
Seriously, what is this juice craze all about and why do people do it? Should I try it?
You got questions? Well, we have answers.
Here at Bali Direct we love our juices, and no, we’re not talking about the sugar-infused Minute Maid orange juice you see on television advertisements. We’re talking about the good stuff. The raw, fresh, locally produced juice containing nothing but fresh fruits and veggies.
The earliest evidence of humans drinking juice dates all the way back to 8000 BC when humans first discovered the yummy liquid coming out of grapes. The first signs of wide scale juice production came in the mid 16th century when certain regions of the Middle East began exporting lemonade to Italy. Orange juice originated in the 17th century, and in the 18th century, drinking orange juice was linked to the prevention of scurvy. Our understanding of the health benefits of juice has only grown since then.
So, what is juicing?
By definition, juicing is simply the process of extracting juice from plant tissues such as fruit or vegetables. More coloqially, the term juicing may refer to a daily regiment of juice consumption, either as a supplement to a regular diet, or as a replacement for solid food. This leads us to our second point…
What is a juice cleanse?
Juice cleansing, also known as juice fasting, is the practice of only consuming fruit and vegetable juice while abstaining from consumption of solid foods. The most common juice cleanses last anywhere from 1 to 10 days, though if you’re new to juicing, we suggest you stick to just a 1 day cleanse to start.
What is this juice craze all about?
The juice craze is real, and it’s quickly spreading worldwide. In Bali, where we have such an abundance of naturally grown tropical fruits and vegetables, juicing is particularly popular. The juices produced here are fresh, delicious, and abounding with health benefits. 95% of the vitamins and enzymes our bodies need are found in the juice of raw fruits vegetables. Research shows that humans would need to eat 2 lbs of carrots, 10-12 apples, or 8 lbs of spinach to get the same amount nutrients you receive in one 16 oz juice.
The specific benefits reaped from drinking juice depends on which fruits and vegetables are included. For example, a green juice consisting of spinach, apple, cucumber, and lime helps control blood sugar and lowers cholesterol. A red juice comprised of celery, watermelon, apple, and orange, on the other hand, will be great for the heart and is packed with antioxidants that strengthen the immune system.
